Defiance

Shouldering up from the cliff top grass

In defiance to the gale.

Struggling free of the past

Of Victorian Crinolines

That passed to and fro just here.

Gazing steely eyed

Battling what’s to come.

A figure head.

The past is sinking beneath her.

She must continue her struggle

Upwards.

Out in the bay, destroyers

Run before the storm.

Daring and Dauntless

She mirrors their sweep and turn.

She must press forward.

Freeing herself

From beach

And the waves that break along the groynes

Sending up spray to wet her lips

She is the destroyer:

The figure head of

A long past shipwreck.

And now she leans into the wind,

Dauntless

Daring it

To answer her.

She is the defender

The fighter of storms.
